Tackling Housing Deficit Summit 2024

In 2024, the developing global housing crisis and its crippling effects on the global economy as well as access to quality housing and shelter around the world birthed the first edition of the “THD SUMMIT” also known as Bridging Housing Deficit themed “Housing Sustainability Development: Navigating Home Ownership Amidst Economic Uncertainties” in a bid to collaborate and discuss possible solutions for adequate, secure and affordable housing specifically in Nigeria.

This event was hosted within the premises of the ongoing state of the art, one of a kind Lekki Aviation Town construction site, one of the 7 Citadels of Joy by Harmony Garden and Estate Development Limited managed and overseen by none other than the Lagos Landlord and CEO of Harmony Garden and Estate Development Limited; Hon. (Dr.) Saheed Audullahi Mosadoluwa.

An event graced by dignitaries and real estate moguls; in attendance were His Excellency Jide Sanwoolu the Executive Governor of Lagos state, His Excellency Goodluck Jonathan the former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde the Executive Governor of Oyo state, the Honorable Minister of the Federal Ministry of Housing and Development Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, HRM Etsu Nupe, Her Imminence The Iyaloja General of Lagos State, Foreign Nationals, and Members of the Diplomatic Corps; to name a few.

A congregation of like minded front runners looking to proffer solutions to the persistent housing problems the nation currently faces. Ensuring extensive media coverage was essential to the summit’s outreach goals and was supported and broadcasted by prominent media houses including the National Television Authority (NTA), Channels news, SilverbirdTV and International TV station Aljazeera, as well as live streaming across social media channels.

The THD summit highlighted the major causes that trigger Housing Deficits, Government and private causes, and long lasting solutions were also proffered to this menace of Housing deficits. According to research carried out, the vacancy rate in the country is dwindling at a rapid rate and requires quick action to curb the outcome of such a heavy deficit by enabling a significant portion of Nigerians to explore strategic home ownership policies amidst the hiking housing economy. Problems highlighted included high inflation in construction, skilled trade shortage, government policies and interference, expanding gap between housing demand and supply and persistence of low vacancy rates.

THD SUMMIT BRIEF

During the discussions, Panelists mentioned solutions to address and foster these problems in real time; estimated that there was a need for construction of more than seven million new homes to realistically tackle the housing deficit. It was stated that while Government initiatives position themselves to also tackle these problems foreseen and unfortunate challenges persist therefore the THD Summit “serves as a pivotal platform to explore solutions and navigate economic uncertainties surrounding house ownership in Nigeria, urging collective action…”

Four agendas of the THD Summit 2024 were up for discussion. Agendas that were discussed as a proposed initiative to implement the previously highlighted solutions to Nigerians 

• Adequate Housing for Nigerians: Strategies, Commitments and Innovations for Sustainable Housing
• Fostering Inclusive Nature based Solutions for Low Income Nigerians
• Building Inclusive Cities and Solidarity Communities around the Free Trade Zone
• Innovative Housing for the Urban

In conclusion, it was a day to discuss the future of housing and innovative shelter availability and development to Nigerians that fall under the scope of lack of access to necessary resources and creating means of providing required assistance amidst a desperate economic crisis, one that is terribly crippling real estate progression in Nigeria.
